Happy Halloween and Día de los Muertos from Mexico (Evan and I are currently in Tulum)! In honor of the Hocus Pocus 2 debut this year, my partner and I decided to throw a Hocus Pocus party. In preparation for the event, I ordered a Sarah Sanderson custom-made costume from Etsy. I also crafted a witch hat just in case my outfit did not arrive on time (you know how it can be with shipping delays). Luckily my costume did arrive as scheduled, and I still had a chance to wear my DIY witch hat to an event called Witch Fest that takes place just south of Salt Lake City, UT. The best part of making my own hat is that I can now re-use this for Halloweens to come. Watch out, there’s a new witch in town!
Alas, this probably leads us to your next question on how I made this so-called DYI witch hat. Lucky for you, I have a step-by-step guide so you, too, can create your very own!
DIY Witch Hat Guide
Materials
- One yard velvet fabric
- One yard felt fabric
- Glue sticks and glue gun
- Scissors
- Ribbon
- Embellishments and sequins
How To
1. Measure circumference around your head. The diameter of that circumference will be the inner measurement that will be cut out. Start by folding both the velvet and felt fabric in half. On the fold (length) cut out a smaller opening (the diameter of your head lengthwise and allowing a few inches for height). Give yourself a few inches space around that for the witch hat brim. Cut a larger half circle around that. When you fold the rainbow shaped fabric open, you should have a large circle with a smaller circle in the middle.
2. Using the hot glue gun, fuse the brim velvet fabric on top of the brim felt fabric. The felt fabric will serve as a sturdy base for your hat.
3. Next, using the remaining velvet and felt fabric, cut out a triangle shape on both fabrics. This is going to serve as the top of the witch’s hat. Make sure the base length section of the cone is a little longer measurement than the circumference of your head as that will be hot glued around the smaller cut-out circle. You also want to make sure the height of the triangle is longer/taller so you can glue those ends together and make it proportionate to the base. When you glue the ends together, this will create the cone shape for the witch’s hat!
4. Using the hot glue gun again, fuse the felt cone inside the velvet cone.
5. Subsequently, use the glue gun to attach the cone bottom around the outside of the smaller circle. Your witch hat is now ready to be decorated!
6. Here is where the final touches come in. Use your ribbon and embellishments/sequins to decorate your hat. Get creative as you would like here! I personally went with some moon and star embellishments.
Happy Haunting… I mean crafting!

A bit about me... Born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, I always dreamed about what laid beyond my backyard. Sure, the smell of pine trees and sight of freshly fallen snow was always magical, but I yearned for more. So, after high school, I packed up my bags, left the mittens behind, and moved to sunny Santa Barbara for college. After graduation, I moved to San Francisco for a year, then to Malibu/Los Angeles to complete my Master's degree at Pepperdine. But now I'm back beaches! I am working as an Undergraduate Advisor at UC Santa Barbara. And as the saying goes- suns out, buns out, and holy quesadilla there are flying tortillas everywhere (something like that). So, you are probably wondering what the heck is this blog about?! Well let me tell ya... I'm still trying to figure that out myself haha. But, it is 2020 ... and it's about time I stopped talking about creating a blog and just did the damn thing. I thought writing about travel would be fun (and I am definitely going to do this, but in a realistic way, because lets face it, I am not showering in money). But I also thought it might be cool to just do a lifestyle blog and talk about whatever pops into my mind. Don't get me wrong, I am that basic chai tea, country music lovin', curl up and read a book, white girl. But I also have so many more passions/thoughts beyond this surface-level stuff. So get ready, grab your coffee (or wine), and check out my posts! Enjoy, Amanda
