Happy Pride Month!! Pride is commemorated in June, since that was the month when the Stonewall Riots occurred. For those who aren’t as familiar, the Stonewall Riots were protests that took place in 1969 in the US, that helped ignite gay rights in America. The rainbow also has cultural significance in Hawaii, where Hawaii is nicknamed “The Rainbow State” and features this symbol on their state license plate. Evan and I will be traveling to Oahu, Hawaii in about a week (stay tuned for my Hawaii vlog).
Thus, since we are currently in the month of June, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to post a blog about crafting a macrame rainbow. This way you can make your own DIY rainbow and add “happy vibes” to your home.
DIY Macrame Rainbow
What you will need:
Hot glue gun
Sewing needle and thread
Pen
Ruler
Scissors
Craft wire
Macrame rope
Yarn (this can be different colors or a singular color)
Any other embellishments you want to use (yarn pom poms, beads, charms, embroidery thread, glitter yarn, etc.)
- Using your macrame rope and ruler, measure out the length you want for each row and use your scissors to cut off each row. You might use your pen to mark the points on each end you want uncovered. As a rule of thumb, we might use the following proportions for what we will leave uncovered on each end: 7 rows 7 cm, 5 rows 5 cm, 4 rows 4 cm, and 3 rows 3 cm.
- On the shortest row, attach the craft wire in the middle with the hot glue gun, as this will hold the shape of the rainbow.
- Make sure to choose your colored yarn order and get to wrapping! Tie the yarn to the macrame rope at the first pen mark. Wrap your yarn tightly and check for any gaps as you are progressing. Once you are at the second pen mark, secure your yarn with a knot or two. As an option, you can add an accent color, or stripes and crosses, using excess yarn or glitter yarn.
- Once all rows are covered with your desired material (in this diy project, we are using yarn), brush out the ends of the macrame rope that are not covered. Trim any excess yarn. An option is adding pom poms and securing with hot glue. .
- Connect your rows. You can use hot glue in between rows or you can use your needle and thread to push through each row and pull it all together.
- Depending on whether you want your rainbow to be on a keychain or attached to a wall, you can use beads/charms or excess yarn up top. If making into a keychain, make sure to attach a keychain loop up top. If securing to a wall, you can even just hang it on a nail in between rows.

A bit about me... Born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, I always dreamed about what laid beyond my backyard. Sure, the smell of pine trees and sight of freshly fallen snow was always magical, but I yearned for more. So, after high school, I packed up my bags, left the mittens behind, and moved to sunny Santa Barbara for college. After graduation, I moved to San Francisco for a year, then to Malibu/Los Angeles to complete my Master's degree at Pepperdine. But now I'm back beaches! I am working as an Undergraduate Advisor at UC Santa Barbara. And as the saying goes- suns out, buns out, and holy quesadilla there are flying tortillas everywhere (something like that). So, you are probably wondering what the heck is this blog about?! Well let me tell ya... I'm still trying to figure that out myself haha. But, it is 2020 ... and it's about time I stopped talking about creating a blog and just did the damn thing. I thought writing about travel would be fun (and I am definitely going to do this, but in a realistic way, because lets face it, I am not showering in money). But I also thought it might be cool to just do a lifestyle blog and talk about whatever pops into my mind. Don't get me wrong, I am that basic chai tea, country music lovin', curl up and read a book, white girl. But I also have so many more passions/thoughts beyond this surface-level stuff. So get ready, grab your coffee (or wine), and check out my posts! Enjoy, Amanda
